Things I Did Differently Second Time Around & Why They Mattered

After a difficult first birth, I knew I wanted to do things differently next time. Here are the changes I made — from hypnobirthing to freezer prep — and why they made such a difference.

1. I Took a Hypnobirthing Course

Unlike my first pregnancy, I didn’t want to go in unprepared. Hypnobirthing gave me the knowledge and tools I needed to feel calm, informed, and confident. I practised breathwork, visualisations, and learned what my body actually does in birth — things I wish I’d known the first time around.

2. I Focused on My Nutrition

I took the time to:

  • Eat more red meat, leafy greens, and whole foods

  • Tailor my supplements to support pregnancy (with guidance)

  • Really prioritise hydration and iron-rich foods
This made a huge difference to my energy and recovery — and I felt much more physically ready for birth and beyond.

3. I Did Freezer Prep — And It Was a Game Changer

I batch-cooked healthy, home-made meals for those early weeks. It might sound small, but having ready-made, nourishing food when you're tired and sore is everything. It gave me time to rest and bond without worrying about cooking or takeaways.

4. I Did Placenta Encapsulation

This won’t be for everyone — but personally, I noticed a massive difference in my recovery. My energy levels, mood, and general wellbeing all felt more stable. I know it was one of many changes I made — but I believe it played a role.

5. I Started Maternity Leave Earlier

Having more time to rest, prepare mentally, and slow down made a big difference. I wasn’t rushing to the end, and I had more space to connect with my body and baby before labour started.

6. I Spent More Time Communicating With My Partner

We spoke in detail about:

  • Visitors

  • Feeding plans

  • Overnight expectations

  • How we’d support each other in the early days
We created realistic plans together, and it made things feel so much more manageable.

7. I Spent Less on “Stuff” — And More on Support

This time I knew: You don’t need all the gadgets. What you need is support, nourishment, and knowledge. I invested in hypnobirthing, proper nutrition, and prep that would actually serve me during birth and those first tender weeks.
